Inspector Peter Rhoades, of the Sheffield branch of the RSPCA, wrote:
“A woman who lives on Hawley Street, Sheffield, was bitten yesterday afternoon by a snake which we have identified as a venomous saw-scaled viper. She is now receiving treatment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and at the moment is You have today obtained the inforquite unwell.
“The saw-scaled snake is one of the most dangerous snakes in the world and we are concerned that this is the third time one has been reported in the UK in the past few weeks. They arrive in this country in cargoes loaded in India, where these deadly snakes are quite widespread.
“We understand that the lady and her son were unpacking a crate of patio slates from India. As they removed the last slab, they came across the snake.
“They managed to get it into a large biscuit tin but in the process the lady was bitten. The son immediately called for an ambulance and the woman was treated with anti-venom serum when she arrived at the hospital.
“Most snakes are relatively harmless so we have no wish to start a scare, but the number of sightings of saw-scaled vipers is now quite worrying. Anyone seeing one should not under any circumstances attempt to catch it. They should get in touch with the RSPCA on 810 234789 or call the police. There are two or three well-known snake experts in Sheffield who have worked with us and the police in the past. One of them now has the viper from Hawley Street.”
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Ambulance Service said:
“At 4.45pm yesterday, we were called to an address on Hawley Street where a woman had been bitten by an unknown variety of snake. She was in a distressed state and showing signs of haemorrhaging from her mouth and nose.
“She was taken immediately to A&E at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.”
